Every day brings something new. Additional insults from the White House targeting federal employees, demands from Elon Musk, layoffs, and programs being cancelled. Additionally, a budget crisis is on the horizon.
The Executive Order that created DOGE states its purpose is to “implement the President’s DOGE Agenda, by modernizing Federal technology and software to maximize governmental efficiency and productivity.” The EO also directs the DOGE Committee to implement a “Software Modernization Initiative,” which would seek to improve the efficiency of federal software and information technology (IT) systems as well as promote interoperability among agency networks and systems.
I would like to officially state that I strongly disagree with the current strategy employed by the Musk team at DOGE. It seems to be lacking transparency, driven by ideology, superficial, insensitive, and occasionally unlawful.
Numerous efforts have been undertaken to revamp federal procurement practices, aiming to infuse more innovation into federal agencies, modernize information systems, and enhance inefficient governmental processes. I am hopeful that the DOGE mission's role in realizing these objectives will truly come to pass.
Amidst the DOGE turmoil, innovative small GovCons are engaging with their government clients to assist them in adapting. These small GovCons have demonstrated exceptional skill and responsiveness to the evolving needs of agencies. They are now aiding in justifying their work by assessing impact and aligning their efforts with the agency's mission. Numerous small IT firms, well-versed in the agencies' systems, are proposing immediate changes to enhance efficiency, accountability, and decision-making. In the long run, small GovCons, proficient and certified in agile systems design and AI, are uniquely equipped to support larger-scale IT modernization.
Instead of retreating, they are intensifying their efforts. They aren't waiting for things to calm down. Federal agencies play a crucial role in serving the American public by enhancing their freedom, ensuring their safety, promoting justice, and offering social safety nets. The majority of Federal workers and government contractors are dedicated public servants who take their duties very seriously. They remain steadfast in their missions.
